10 Years of "Paws" at the Airport: Celebrating a Decade of Pet Therapy at YEG

Edmonton International Airport's pet therapy program marks a milestone, bringing comfort and joy to travelers for ten years.

Edmonton International Airport (YEG) is celebrating a significant milestone: the 10th anniversary of its beloved pet therapy program. Since its inception in 2015, this initiative has provided comfort and joy to countless travelers, becoming a hallmark of YEG's commitment to passenger well-being.

The program, a collaboration with the Pet Therapy Society of Northern Alberta, was the first of its kind in Canada. It features a team of specially trained therapy dogs and their dedicated handlers who roam the terminal, offering stress relief and companionship to passengers. These four-legged ambassadors are easily recognizable by their distinctive teal "Pet Me" vests, inviting travelers to engage and interact.

Over the past decade, the pet therapy program has expanded significantly. Currently, there are 12 certified dogs and their handlers who visit YEG regularly, typically between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., seven days a week. Their presence has been especially impactful during peak travel times, such as the holiday season, when passenger anxiety tends to be higher.

The success of YEG's pet therapy program has inspired other airports across North America to implement similar initiatives. The positive feedback from travelers underscores the program's effectiveness in enhancing the airport experience.

In addition to the pet therapy program, YEG has introduced other initiatives to support passenger well-being. In April 2025, the airport unveiled a sensory room designed to assist travelers with sensory sensitivities, including autism and anxiety. Developed in collaboration with Autism Edmonton, the room offers a calming environment with interactive panels, a sensory pad, and a soothing visual display of the Northern Lights.

YEG's commitment to passenger comfort extends beyond these programs. The airport has recently completed significant infrastructure upgrades, including the reopening of the Departures Roadway and Ramp in October 2024. These enhancements have improved traffic flow and accessibility, ensuring a smoother experience for all travelers.

As YEG celebrates a decade of "paws" at the airport, the enduring success of the pet therapy program stands as a testament to the airport's dedication to creating a welcoming and stress-free environment for its passengers. The program's continued growth and positive impact highlight the importance of innovative approaches to enhancing the travel experience.

For those interested in learning more about the pet therapy program or volunteering, information is available through the Pet Therapy Society of Northern Alberta. As YEG looks to the future, it remains committed to initiatives that prioritize passenger well-being and comfort.
