Apr 5, 2026NorQuest College, a key fixture in Edmonton’s education sector, is grappling with serious financial pressures as stagnant provincial funding and a federal cap on international student permits reduce enrolment.
Approximately 100 staff positions will be cut by mid-April, reflecting budget shortfalls from declining international admissions — students who have long bolstered both NorQuest’s inclusive campus and its bottom line.
In response, Alberta’s government is investing nearly $1.2 billion into post-secondary education in Budget 2025, focusing on student loans, scholarships, and a major upgrade at NAIT’s Advanced Skills Centre.
Despite these efforts, critics say the existing funding model, based on historical trends rather than current enrolments, leaves colleges exposed to financial instability and calls for reform are growing.
Layoffs and budget cuts not only disrupt daily operations at NorQuest but also spark community worry about ongoing workforce development and crucial programs, including large events connecting students to employers in Edmonton.
