Alberta Implements 'Naughty List' and $10,000 Fines to Safeguard High Level Bridge

New Measures Aim to Prevent Overheight Truck Collisions and Preserve Historic Infrastructure

The Alberta government has introduced a "Naughty List" and potential $10,000 fines for truckers who hit the High Level Bridge, which has been struck 21 times in the last six years.

Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen emphasized the urgency of addressing these incidents, noting that the bridge has been hit five times this year alone, with ten additional near-misses where trucks stopped just in time. These collisions not only cause significant traffic disruptions but also pose safety risks and lead to costly repairs.

The "Naughty List" will publicly identify drivers and companies responsible for such collisions, aiming to deter future violations. This transparency is expected to hold offenders accountable and encourage compliance with height restrictions.

In addition to the "Naughty List," the province is considering increasing fines for overheight vehicle collisions. Currently, fines can reach up to $10,000, but a comprehensive review of legislation may lead to steeper penalties and potential suspension or confiscation of drivers' licenses.

Recent incidents underscore the need for these measures. In March 2025, a semi-truck hauling construction equipment collided with the 34th Street overpass on the Sherwood Park Freeway, resulting in extensive damage and nearly $40,000 in fines for the driver and trucking company. Similarly, in July 2025, a truck carrying a grain silo struck the Highway 21 overpass south of Sherwood Park, causing significant structural damage and traffic disruptions.

Community response has been supportive of the government's initiatives. Residents and local businesses have expressed frustration over the recurring bridge strikes and the resulting traffic congestion. Many believe that stricter enforcement and higher penalties are necessary to protect the city's infrastructure and ensure public safety.

The City of Edmonton's Vision Zero strategy aligns with these efforts, aiming to eliminate traffic-related serious injuries and fatalities through safer, more livable streets. The strategy emphasizes that no loss of life is acceptable and that traffic incidents are preventable.

As part of ongoing infrastructure improvements, the High Level Bridge is slated for rehabilitation to ensure its continued operation and safety. The project will focus on structural repairs, safety enhancements, and improving accessibility for all users.

These combined efforts reflect a comprehensive approach to safeguarding Edmonton's historic bridges and enhancing overall traffic safety in the region.
