E-Bike Battery Warning: Edmonton Fire Rescue Services Highlights Lithium-Ion Battery Risks After Recent Apartment Fire

A downtown Edmonton fire caused by an e-bike battery prompts urgent safety warnings from officials.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) is raising alarms about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries following a significant fire in a central apartment building.

The blaze, which erupted on January 14, 2026, at a high-rise near 100 Avenue and 115 Street, was traced back to an e-bike battery stored on a sixth-floor balcony.

Two residents were hospitalized, including one who sustained serious injuries after jumping from the balcony to escape the flames.

Approximately 80 occupants were evacuated, with 20 unable to return to their homes due to extensive damage.

Assistant Deputy Chief Justin Lallemand emphasized the severity of such incidents, noting that EFRS responded to eight fires involving lithium-ion batteries in the previous year.

He stated, "These fires are aggressive, explosive, and you need to just get out of there and let the firefighters come in and do what they're going to do."

To mitigate risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, EFRS recommends the following precautions:

Proper Charging Practices: Avoid charging devices overnight and do not exceed the manufacturer's recommended charging time.

Use Certified Equipment: Only use batteries and chargers that are certified and intended for the specific device.

Safe Storage: Store batteries in a cool, dry place away from flammable materials and out of direct sunlight.

Disposal: Do not dispose of lithium-ion batteries in regular garbage. Instead, take them to an Eco Station or a participating retailer for safe recycling.

In response to the increasing incidents, EFRS has launched the "Charged for Life" campaign to educate residents on lithium-ion battery safety.

The initiative provides resources on proper usage, storage, and disposal of these batteries to prevent future fires.

Residents are encouraged to visit the campaign's website for detailed safety tips and to stay informed about best practices.

As e-bikes and other battery-powered devices become more prevalent, understanding and adhering to safety guidelines is crucial.

By taking proactive measures, Edmonton residents can help prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of their communities.

For more information on lithium-ion battery safety and disposal locations, residents can contact Edmonton Fire Rescue Services or visit their official website.
