Edmontonians Face 6.9% Property Tax Increase Amidst New City Investments |
City Council Approves Budget to Enhance Services and Infrastructure |
As of January 1, 2026, Edmontonians are experiencing a 6.9% increase in property taxes.
For the average homeowner, this translates to an additional $245 annually.
This adjustment is part of the city's strategy to maintain essential services and fund new infrastructure projects.
One significant initiative is the Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre, slated to open by the end of this month.
The facility will feature a fitness center, running track, velodrome, bouldering wall, sports courts, spin studio, multi-purpose rooms, indoor play space, child-minding area, and retail space.
It will also be connected to the Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre.
In addition to the recreation center, the budget includes $11 million in ongoing funding for Explore Edmonton, the city's tourism department.
This investment aims to attract major events and boost tourism revenue.
Furthermore, $5.8 million has been allocated for additional peace officers to enhance traffic safety, addressing concerns over increasing traffic incidents.
Another notable project is the $9.3 million improvement to the Whitemud Drive and 215 Street/Winterburn Road intersection.
This upgrade is a collaborative effort between the city, the Enoch Cree Nation, and the provincial government, each contributing a third of the funding.
Mayor Andrew Knack emphasized the importance of these investments, stating, "While an increase of 6.9% to property taxes is higher than I would’ve liked, the budget adjustments made were based on choosing to position ourselves on a stronger path forward."
Residents will receive their property tax notices in May 2026, with payments due by June 30 to avoid late penalties.
These funds are crucial for sustaining and enhancing the services and infrastructure that contribute to Edmonton's growth and quality of life.
For more details on the budget and its implications, residents are encouraged to visit the city's official website or contact the municipal offices directly. |
