Elections Alberta Approves Separation Referendum Question |
Alberta Prosperity Project Initiates Signature Drive for Independence Vote |
In a significant political development, Elections Alberta has approved a proposed referendum question concerning Alberta's potential separation from Canada.
The approved question asks: "Do you agree that the province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?"
This approval marks a pivotal moment for the Alberta Prosperity Project (APP), led by CEO Mitch Sylvestre, who also serves as a constituency association president for Premier Danielle Smith's United Conservative Party.
The APP now has until early January to appoint a financial officer, after which they will embark on a four-month campaign to collect nearly 178,000 signatures.
If successful, this effort will trigger a province-wide referendum on Alberta's independence.
The APP celebrated the approval as a "huge victory" for the province, stating, "This is the breakthrough we've been fighting for. Soon, we'll be collecting signatures to put Alberta's future directly in your hands."
This development follows a previous attempt by the APP to pose a similar question: "Do you agree that the province of Alberta shall become a sovereign country and cease to be a province in Canada?"
That initiative was delayed due to a constitutional review.
In response to these delays, Premier Danielle Smith's government recently amended the rules governing citizen-initiated referendums.
These changes rendered the court review moot and allowed Sylvestre to reapply without charge.
As the APP prepares to gather signatures, the political landscape in Alberta is poised for intense debate.
Supporters argue that independence would grant Alberta greater control over its resources and policies, while opponents caution against the economic and social uncertainties that could arise from separation.
In the coming months, Albertans will witness a vigorous campaign as the APP seeks to meet the signature threshold required to bring the question of independence to a referendum.
The outcome of this initiative could have profound implications for the province's future within or outside of Canada. |
