Edmonton's commitment to fostering active transportation among students has taken a significant leap forward with the expansion of the Bike Bus program to additional schools across the city.

This initiative, designed to promote safe and communal cycling to school, is gaining momentum and may soon extend its reach to other municipalities in Alberta.

The Bike Bus concept is straightforward yet impactful: students and accompanying adults ride together along predetermined routes, picking up participants at designated meeting zones, much like a traditional school bus but on bicycles.

Each route is carefully planned to ensure safety and convenience, allowing children to join the group as it passes their homes or at specified stops.

In the spring of 2026, the program expanded to include Westglen Elementary in the Westmount neighborhood and Lendrum Elementary in south Edmonton.

These additions build upon the success of the initial route established at Rutherford School in Bonnie Doon earlier in the school year.

According to recent reports, the program's growth is driven by community enthusiasm and a shared vision for healthier, more connected neighborhoods.

Each Bike Bus route operates on a regular schedule, with morning and afternoon rides that follow the same path.

Participants can join at any point along the route, with meeting zones providing reliable timing and safe gathering spots.

Adult volunteers, often parents or local cycling enthusiasts, accompany the group to ensure safety and to foster a sense of community.

One such volunteer, Mike, serves as the Bike Bus Champion for the Westglen route.

With a background in engineering and project management, Mike brings a thoughtful and fun approach to the rides, sharing his passion for cycling and its benefits with the community.

The success of the Bike Bus program aligns with Edmonton's broader efforts to enhance active transportation infrastructure.

The city's Active Transportation Network Expansion Program has been instrumental in this regard, with 35 kilometers of new active transportation connections completed between 2024 and 2025, and an additional 33 kilometers planned for construction in 2026 and beyond.

These developments provide safer and more accessible routes for cyclists of all ages, supporting initiatives like the Bike Bus.

Furthermore, the city's School Bike Parking Grant program has been pivotal in encouraging cycling among students.

In 2024, Edmonton awarded $75,000 to nine schools to improve secure bike parking facilities, addressing a key barrier to cycling and promoting active transportation to and from school.

The expansion of the Bike Bus program is not only a testament to the city's commitment to sustainable transportation but also reflects a growing community movement towards healthier lifestyles and environmental stewardship.

As the program continues to gain traction, there is potential for its adoption in other Alberta cities, further promoting the benefits of cycling among students and communities.

For families interested in participating or learning more about the Bike Bus routes, detailed information, including route maps and schedules, is available through the program's official channels.

Engaging in this initiative offers a unique opportunity to be part of a movement that prioritizes safety, health, and community connection through the simple act of cycling to school.
