Learn about residential street sweeping and spring street cleaning schedules |
As the snow melts and spring emerges, Edmonton gears up for its annual residential street sweeping program, a crucial initiative to clear debris and ensure cleaner, safer neighborhoods.
Starting in early April, the city embarks on a comprehensive spring street cleaning operation, targeting roads, bike lanes, and major pathways. This extensive process, spanning up to eight weeks, is weather-dependent and aims to remove the sand and debris accumulated over the winter months.
Residents play a pivotal role in the success of this program. A parking ban is enforced from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the week crews are active in each neighborhood. Vehicles left on the street during these hours may face a $250 ticket. To stay informed, residents can consult the Street Cleaning Map and subscribe to Service Notifications for timely updates.
In recent years, the city has intensified its efforts. For instance, in 2025, crews cleaned over 6,200 kilometers of roadways, addressing the increased debris resulting from a harsher winter. This underscores the importance of community cooperation in maintaining the city's cleanliness.
To facilitate the process, temporary white signage is placed at main entrances of neighborhoods at least 24 hours before cleaning is scheduled. These signs indicate the specific week designated for sweeping. Residents are encouraged to move their vehicles off the streets during the parking ban to allow crews to perform their duties efficiently.
It's essential to note that residential roads are swept between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays, while major roads and boulevards are addressed 24 hours a day, often overnight, to minimize traffic disruptions. The city employs measures to reduce dust during sweeping, but residents should be prepared for temporary dusty conditions and are advised to drive cautiously when near sweeping equipment.
For those with driveway ramps extending onto the road, it's crucial to remove them during the sweeping period, as they can hinder the cleaning process. The city is not responsible for any damage that may occur if ramps are left in place.
Accessible parking spaces are exempt from the parking ban, provided vehicles display valid accessible parking placards. Unauthorized vehicles in these zones will be fined.
Beyond the spring sweep, the city continues maintenance throughout the year. Summer sweeping occurs at night from June 1 to the end of October, focusing on high-traffic areas. Residents are encouraged to report areas requiring additional attention by calling 311.
By adhering to these guidelines and cooperating with city crews, residents contribute significantly to the success of Edmonton's street sweeping program, ensuring cleaner and safer neighborhoods for all. |
