The ambitious transformation of Edmonton's Yellowhead Trail into a free-flowing freeway has entered its final phase, with the project on schedule for completion by the end of 2027.
Initiated in 2019, this extensive undertaking aims to enhance safety, reduce congestion, and improve the movement of goods and services along one of the city's most vital transportation corridors.
As of January 2026, significant progress has been made across various segments of the project.
The Fort Road Widening, stretching from 66 Street to Yellowhead Trail, has been completed, featuring three lanes in each direction and improved access to local businesses via the new 125 Avenue collector road.
Landscaping efforts are ongoing, with final touches expected by 2025.
In the section between St. Albert Trail and 97 Street, construction is actively underway.
This phase includes the removal of all traffic signals and direct accesses to Yellowhead Trail, the addition of new interchanges at 127 Street and 121 Street, and the construction of service roads to manage traffic flow.
To ensure safety and efficiency, traffic has been reduced to two lanes in both directions, with speed limits set at 50 km/h in construction zones.
Looking ahead, the removal of the at-grade, signalized intersection at 66 Street is slated to begin in 2026.
This project will involve the construction of a new overpass, further contributing to the goal of uninterrupted traffic flow along the corridor.
The Active Transportation Network Expansion Program complements the freeway conversion by enhancing pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure.
Since its inception in 2024, the program has added 35 kilometers of new active transportation routes, with an additional 33 kilometers planned for construction through 2026 and beyond.
These improvements aim to provide safe, direct options for commuting and recreational activities, promoting healthier lifestyles and reducing vehicle trips.
In the realm of real estate, the area surrounding Yellowhead Trail has seen notable developments.
In October 2024, Walton Global sold a 41-acre industrial lot in northeast Edmonton, known as Yellowhead Industrial, to an undisclosed buyer.
The purchaser plans to develop the site into an industrial subdivision, reflecting the region's growing appeal for industrial investments.
Additionally, in July 2025, Elite Real Estate Group acquired the Coast Home Centre, a 60,000 square foot retail property located at 10804 – 170 Street in West Edmonton.
This acquisition underscores the strategic importance of properties with exceptional visibility and connectivity to major routes like Yellowhead Trail and the Anthony Henday Drive.
The Yellowhead Trail Freeway Conversion is a collaborative effort, with funding commitments from federal, provincial, and municipal governments totaling approximately $1 billion.
Upon completion, the freeway will feature three lanes of free-flowing traffic in each direction, significantly improving travel times and safety for the estimated 81,000 vehicles that use the route daily.
As construction progresses, residents and commuters are encouraged to stay informed about ongoing developments and potential traffic impacts.
The City of Edmonton remains committed to engaging with the public to ensure the project meets the needs of all road users, area residents, and businesses.
