Alberta has made highway history - and drivers heading south out of Edmonton may have seen it happen firsthand. On April 29, 2026, a 22-kilometre stretch of Highway 2 south of Leduc became the first road in Alberta posted at 120 km/h, tying British Columbia's Coquihalla as the highest legal speed limit in Canada.
The provincial pilot - running through summer 2026 - follows a fall 2025 survey where nearly 70 per cent of Albertans supported the change. Officials say the corridor was engineered for 120 km/h from the start, and recent infrastructure upgrades to Leduc and Wetaskiwin County overpasses made it the logical test site.
Not everyone is celebrating. Safety advocates point to record fatal collisions in the Edmonton region last year, with speed a consistent factor.
The province has responded by increasing fines for serious driving offences by 50 per cent. Sensors and RCMP patrols are already active. If data supports it, more Alberta highways could follow. Read More... |
