Edmonton city councillors are voicing urgent concerns over the rising Alberta separatist movement, warning of major economic risks and growing instability.
Councillor Keren Tang pointed out that separatist rhetoric undermines efforts to attract new investment and diversify the cityâs economy, adding uncertainty that drives businesses away.
The Edmonton Chamber of Commerce echoed these fears, revealing that an independent Alberta could face a daunting $600 billion debtâincluding federal obligations and pensionsâthreatening both growth and jobs.
Business leaders stress that even talk of a separation referendum could chill investor confidence, deepening economic challenges like slowing job growth and stagnant household income.
Some neighborhoods, such as McCauley, are seeing property value spikes that fuel concerns over affordability and gentrification.
