In a significant development for Jasper's hospitality scene, two sisters from Edmonton have taken ownership of the historic Athabasca Hotel, a cherished landmark in the heart of Jasper, Alberta. This transition marks a new chapter for the hotel, affectionately known as the Atha-B, which has been a cornerstone of the community since its establishment in 1929.

The Athabasca Hotel stands proudly at 510 Patricia Street, offering guests a blend of old-world charm and modern conveniences. Its prime location, just a block from the train station, makes it an ideal base for exploring Jasper's myriad attractions. Visitors can enjoy complimentary access to the Jasper Activity and Aquatic Centres, located a short three-block stroll away. The hotel's proximity to shops, museums, galleries, and tour services ensures that guests have a wealth of activities at their fingertips.

The Atha-B has a storied past. Originally, the site housed Douglas Woolley's grocery store and ladies' wear shop, with a rooming house upstairs known as Jasper Rooms. In 1921, the establishment expanded and was officially named the Athabasca Hotel. By 1928, the Calgary Brewing and Malting Company acquired the property, replacing the original wooden structure with a grand three-story brick building designed by George Fordyce of Calgary. This transformation solidified the hotel's status as a premier destination for adventurers and business travelers alike

The new owners, both seasoned hoteliers, bring a wealth of experience to the Athabasca Hotel. Their vision includes preserving the hotel's rich heritage while introducing contemporary amenities to enhance guest comfort. Plans are underway to refurbish guest rooms, update dining facilities, and expand event spaces to cater to both tourists and local residents.

Jasper has faced its share of challenges in recent years. The 2024 wildfires had a profound impact on the community, leading to the loss of numerous structures and the displacement of residents. In response, the Alberta government committed $112 million to construct 250 modular homes within the townsite, providing much-needed housing for those affected.

In addition to housing initiatives, the Municipality of Jasper has focused on enhancing community spaces. The Commemoration Park Community Connection Improvements project, completed in September 2024, introduced new amenities such as a gazebo, pergolas, benches, tables, community garden boxes, and a naturescape toddler playground. These enhancements aim to foster community engagement and provide residents with inviting public spaces.

The acquisition of the Athabasca Hotel by the Edmonton sisters is seen as a positive step toward revitalizing Jasper's tourism sector. Their commitment to honoring the hotel's legacy while introducing modern touches is expected to attract a diverse range of visitors. As Jasper continues to recover and rebuild, the Atha-B stands as a symbol of resilience and renewal in this picturesque mountain town.
