In the news this week

Edmontonians are embracing a new era as Alberta officially adopts permanent daylight saving time, ending the twice-yearly ritual of adjusting clocks.

Beginning November 2026, the province will stay on Mountain Daylight Time (UTC-6:00) year-round instead of falling back to Mountain Standard Time.

With no more springing forward or falling back, families find it easier to manage busy routines, and schools across the city report less confusion for students.

Local businesses, from tech start-ups to coffee shops on Jasper Avenue, welcome the change, citing better productivity, streamlined operations, and the chance to extend evening hours during brighter nights.

City planners and emergency services note potential safety and cost benefits, while mental health advocates believe steadier daylight will help residents during winter.

Some farmers and cross-border businesses remain cautious, but most community members, including parents and teachers, are optimistic that stable Alberta time will smooth daily life and bring more people outdoors to enjoy extended evenings.

As sunsets arrive later, Edmonton adjusts, settling confidently into its new time.
