Alberta is rapidly emerging as a global leader in carbon capture and storage, with a growing network of major CCS hub projects reshaping the province's emissions landscape.
At the forefront is the Origins CCS Hub near Clive, developed by Enhance Energy, which broke ground recently and is set to become Canada's largest carbon storage facility when commercial operations launch in January 2027.
The facility will store up to 1.5 million metric tonnes of CO2 annually — equivalent to removing over 500,000 cars from Canadian roads each year.
Around Edmonton, additional hubs are advancing, including the Wabamun Carbon Hub — notable for offering five Indigenous communities co-ownership stakes — alongside the Meadowbrook Hub, Alberta Carbon Grid, and Atlas Carbon Storage Hub.
Fueling the momentum, federal officials recently announced $21.5 million in new CCS funding, expected to unlock hundreds of millions more in private investment.
While agricultural groups have raised groundwater concerns, proponents point to Alberta's decades of operational experience and proven geology as safeguards — positioning Edmonton as the undisputed commercial capital of Canada's carbon capture future. Read More... |
