In the news this week |
Edmonton city council is entering one of its most closely watched budget seasons in recent memory, with a draft four-year spending plan expected to drop on November 2.
The release will cover capital, operating, and climate budgets simultaneously, and will open public hearing registration the same day.
Hearings begin November 23, with full council approval targeted for December 18.
For households already strained by rising costs, the timing feels urgent. A typical Edmonton homeowner is currently paying roughly $816 in municipal property taxes per $100,000 of assessed value in 2026, up $53 from the prior year.
Meanwhile, council has already locked in an electricity franchise fee hike, raising the rate from 17.65 per cent to 19.4 per cent effective January 1, 2027, adding roughly $1.21 monthly for average households.
Population growth, provincial funding cuts, and a deepening infrastructure deficit are all driving costs upward, making the decisions ahead among the most consequential in recent Edmonton budget history. Read More... |
