Featured story

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) is warning residents about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries after a major fire broke out in a central high-rise on January 14, 2026.

The blaze, sparked by an e-bike battery on a sixth-floor balcony near 100 Avenue and 115 Street, led to two hospitalizations, one of them serious after a resident jumped to escape.

About 80 people were evacuated, with 20 unable to return to their homes because of severe damage.

Assistant Deputy Chief Justin Lallemand highlighted the rapid danger these fires pose, noting EFRS had already responded to eight similar incidents last year.

In response, EFRS launched the "Charged for Life" campaign, aimed at educating Edmontonians on correct charging, safe storage, and proper disposal of lithium-ion batteries.

Following these safety steps is crucial as battery-powered devices become increasingly common in local homes.
