In the news this week

Few issues stir up Edmonton neighbourhoods quite like street parking โ€” and recent policy changes have pushed the debate to a boiling point.

In early 2024, Edmonton City Council approved a sweeping overhaul of the Residential Parking Program, eliminating 15 of 19 existing permit zones and introducing a $120 annual fee for residents in remaining areas.

The backlash was immediate.

Residents in communities like Alberta Avenue and Parkdale warned the changes would flood their streets with commuter and commercial overflow.

By mid-2024, mounting pressure prompted city administration to pause the rollout entirely โ€” a suspension now extended through 2026.

The core tension is philosophical: the city views curbside space as a shared public asset, while many residents see it as a neighbourhood right tied to quality of life.

Meanwhile, standard rules still apply โ€” vehicles may park on most residential streets for up to 72 consecutive hours, with additional restrictions during winter snow bans.

When the city returns to the table after 2026, the engagement it conducts with residents will likely determine the future of neighbourhood parking across Edmonton.
