Discover the Green Shack program and free kids programs available
Edmonton's beloved Green Shack program is back, offering a summer filled with free, engaging activities for children aged six to twelve. Running from June 29 to August 21, 2026, this initiative transforms local parks into vibrant hubs of fun and learning.
Each weekday, program leaders host a variety of games, sports, crafts, music, drama, and special events designed to keep kids active and entertained. Weekly schedules are posted on the side of each Green Shack, ensuring families can plan their visits accordingly.
The program operates in two daily sessions: mornings from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and afternoons from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Some locations offer full-day programming from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It's important to note that children are free to come and go at any time during the program, as it is not a childcare service. Parents and guardians should assess whether their child can attend independently. Children under six are welcome to participate when accompanied by an adult.
In the event of severe weather or poor air quality (Air Quality Health Index of 7 or higher), programming may be canceled or moved indoors at select locations. Families are encouraged to check the program's status before heading out.
For more information, including a map of Green Shack locations and their operating hours, visit the City of Edmonton's official website or contact the 311 Contact Centre.
In addition to the Green Shack program, Edmonton offers other free summer activities for children. The Rhema Kids Summer Day Camp provides a faith-based experience with sports, arts and crafts, and mentorship for children in grades 1–6. Scheduled from July 20 to July 24, 2026, this camp aims to build confidence and encourage teamwork. Registration opens on May 11, 2026, and spots are limited.
Community leagues across Edmonton also host Green Shack programs. For instance, the Baturyn Community League offers sessions at multiple locations, including Baturyn Park and Castlewood Lake Playground. Similarly, the Blue Quill Community League provides programming at sites like Blue Quill Park and Sweet Grass Park. These local initiatives ensure that families have access to free, structured activities close to home.
To make the most of these programs, families should plan ahead. Pairing Green Shack sessions with visits to nearby playgrounds can create a full day of fun. It's advisable to check the specific session times and locations, pack essentials like water and snacks, and have a backup plan in case of weather-related cancellations.
Edmonton's commitment to providing free, accessible summer programs reflects the city's dedication to fostering active, engaged communities. By participating in these initiatives, children can develop new skills, make friends, and create lasting memories throughout the summer months. |
