In the news this week |
Calgary and Edmonton have united, temporarily setting aside their famous rivalry, to jointly pursue hosting the 2028 World Cup of Hockey.
This bid highlights Alberta’s passion for hockey and its track record in international event hosting.
The proposal features Calgary’s under-construction Scotia Place—an $800-million, 18,400-seat arena opening in 2027—and Edmonton’s Rogers Place, an 18,347-seat downtown venue already known for world-class events.
Officials like Valerie Ball from Tourism Calgary stress the province’s readiness and commitment, while NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has praised the quality of the bid.
The partnership signals a strategic shift, moving from the enduring Battle of Alberta to collaboration, and combines both cities’ expertise—Calgary, host of the 1988 Winter Olympics, and Edmonton, the 1978 Commonwealth Games.
With provincial financial backing, this joint bid could secure Alberta’s place on hockey’s global stage. Read More... |
