In the news this week

Alberta is launching a major effort to address rising challenges in its elementary classrooms with a $143 million investment in “complexity teams.”

These teams, each made up of one teacher and two educational assistants, will be deployed to 476 high-need K-6 schools, with Edmonton Public and Catholic Schools receiving a large share.

Edmonton Public Schools will get 101 teams, while Edmonton Catholic Schools receive 42, targeting classrooms with the most complex learning and behavioral needs.

Each team is funded at $300,000, supporting the hiring of about 1,428 staff across the province.

This step follows new data showing nearly 40% of classrooms have multiple students requiring extra support.

The government is also investing $8.6 billion in new and modernized schools, aiming for long-term improvements alongside immediate relief.

Education leaders welcome the move but stress the need for sustained support to ensure lasting progress for Alberta students.
