Edmonton drivers are getting a break at the pump — and it's a meaningful one.
Alberta's provincial government will suspend its full 13-cent-per-litre fuel tax on both gasoline and diesel, starting October 1 through the end of the year.
The move was triggered automatically after WTI crude oil averaged over $90 per barrel — far above the $60 forecast — during the latest quarterly review window.
For Edmonton households, the savings add up fast.
A driver filling 60 litres per week could save over $100 across the three-month period, while even compact car owners stand to keep roughly $70 in their pockets.
The relief runs deeper when layered with a simultaneous federal excise tax suspension — giving Edmonton drivers combined savings of up to 23 cents per litre.
Retailers who pocket the savings rather than passing them on face fines up to $300,000 and potential jail time — authorities will be actively monitoring pump prices.
The suspension could extend into 2027 if oil prices remain elevated, with the next quarterly WTI review set to determine its fate. Read More... |
