In the news this week

The Alberta government is pushing forward legislation to remove bike lanes in Edmonton, sparking heated debate over the city’s transportation future.

Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen argues that bike lanes on main routes worsen traffic congestion and should be eliminated to keep vehicles moving smoothly.

However, Edmonton City Councillor Andrew Knack insists these decisions belong to the city, not the province, and says Edmonton should stay focused on its own priorities, including public safety and housing.

The proposed law has split residents, with community members like Tom Ogonoski rallying against new bike lanes over concerns about lost parking and accessibility, especially for those with mobility challenges.

On the other side, Bike Edmonton and other cycling advocates defend the need for protected bike lanes to encourage sustainable travel and improve cyclist safety.

With projects like the 132nd Avenue bike lane upgrade underway, the standoff over Edmonton’s roads could reshape how people move through the city for years to come.
