In the news this week |
Winter in Edmonton, Alberta is more than a season β it comes with real legal obligations for homeowners.
The city uses a priority-based road clearing system, targeting major arteries first before turning attention to residential streets.
Under the updated policy, residential roadways are targeted for clearing within 14 days once a Phase 2 blading cycle is triggered β but that trigger depends on accumulated conditions, not every snowfall.
Mayor Andrew Knack has acknowledged current service levels fall short of modern demands, pushing for stronger enforcement and higher standards.
Notably, accessibility has been added as a fourth core outcome alongside safety, reliability, and connectivity β a meaningful shift for transit users, seniors, and people with mobility challenges.
Under Bylaw 14600, homeowners must keep adjacent sidewalks fully cleared after snowfall.
Violations can trigger a $100 fine, city contractor fees, and property tax additions.
Windrows over 30 centimetres qualify for city levelling, while cul-de-sacs follow independent β often lengthy β clearing schedules.
The bottom line: clear your sidewalk promptly, know what the city covers, and never assume β complacency in Edmonton winters is expensive. Read More... |
