In the news this week |
The Alberta government is moving to eliminate seasonal clock changes by proposing a permanent new time zone called “Alberta Time.”
This would end the long-standing spring and fall clock adjustments, aiming to simplify life for residents and businesses.
Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally stressed the need for action, while Premier Danielle Smith noted Alberta’s unique position between neighbours that already observe permanent daylight time.
The plan could mean darker winter mornings but lighter evenings year-round, prompting mixed feelings, some welcome steady schedules and health benefits, but others worry about impacts on early routines.
A 2021 referendum showed Albertans are divided, yet changes in British Columbia and Yukon have renewed local interest.
If passed, Alberta would share summer time with Saskatchewan and winter time with B.C., reducing confusion for travelers and businesses.
Consultations are ongoing to gauge preferences and consider effects on industries and health before any final decision. Read More... |
