Edmonton is receiving a major boost in addiction recovery support, with more than $330,000 in provincial funding set to create 140 pre-treatment beds — a critical but often-overlooked step between detox and formal treatment.
These beds fill a dangerous gap where relapse risk spikes highest.
Oxford House Foundation, led by a director who spent seven years in addiction and homelessness, will operate two gender-specific homes — one for women, one for men — providing around-the-clock support, addiction counselling, and life-skills coaching while residents await placement in a full treatment program.
Edmonton carries a disproportionate burden of Alberta's opioid crisis, accounting for more than half of all opioid-related deaths provincewide.
A similar Oxford House model in Calgary has already supported nearly 1,200 Albertans since 2023.
The announcement aligns with Alberta's broader recovery-oriented overhaul, including Recovery Alberta — established in September 2024 — and a $180-million plan for two large-scale compassionate intervention centres.
