Our featured story

In the news this week

Edmonton’s landmark High Level Bridge and Low Level Bridges are nearing the end of their lifespans, pushing city officials to prepare for their eventual replacement.

Built in the early 1900s, these historic structures have long supported vital transportation links.

However, recent city assessments show that ongoing maintenance has become prohibitively expensive, with High Level Bridge costs estimated near $1 billion over the next 75 years.

As a result, Edmonton is exploring plans to decommission and replace both bridges within the next 10 to 15 years.

In the meantime, targeted rehabilitation and maintenance are underway to keep the bridges safe and operational, with work completed on the southbound Low Level Bridge and upgrades planned for the northbound span and High Level Bridge in the coming years.

Future projects will balance historical preservation with the city’s evolving transportation needs, while residents can expect opportunities for ongoing community input.
