Edmonton's legal community is grappling with the growing influence of artificial intelligence after an articling student was formally reprimanded by the Law Society of Alberta for using AI to draft a suspension appeal.

 

The student's submission contained errors and unverified citations, prompting disciplinary action and highlighting the risks of uncritical AI reliance in legal work.

 

Alberta courts have repeatedly stressed the need for meaningful human oversight in AI-generated submissions, echoing warnings in the Law Society’s “Generative AI Playbook.”

 

Despite efficiency gains, lawyers are urged to carefully verify AI outputs to avoid compromising the integrity of legal proceedings.

 

With 89% of Canadian law firms now using AI, local firms like Parlee McLaws LLP and researchers at the University of Alberta are pioneering best practices, but the recent incident serves as a powerful reminder to balance innovation with ethical diligence.
